Cunard Line

It was a more civilazed era, the Golden Age of Ocean Travel. Crossing the ocean
on an ocean liner was a grand event unto itself, the very embodiment of
sophistication and privilege. And travelling Cunard White Star Line was what
one naturally chose for such a voyage. Cunard's glorious ocean liners were
floating palaces of art deco splendour and Edwardian excess, surrounding guests
with every comfort and elegance. They attracted the greatest personalities of
the day, from world leaders to movie stars, who sipped champagne at festive
black-tie soirees ans strolled along graceful promenades attired in their
finest apparel. It was the quintessence of luxury travel, and getting there was
truly half the fun.
Cunard Line proudly continues this tradition of luxury cruising that began in
1840 and maintains the legacy of her Cunard and White Star Line predecessors in
providing a definitive annual World Cruise and the only scheduled transatlantic
liner service.
CelebrateBritish elegance, superb White Star Service, gourmet cuisine
and sumptuous accommodations on board the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth

The south of England boasts a dramatic coastline and some of the most
beautiful countryside in Britain. The regions history matches its scenic
beauty. At nearby Salisbury stands the neolithic circle of Stonehenge. The
remains of Pictic, Roman, and Saxon settlements dot the countryside. The great
cathedral at Winchester is one of the great surviving monuments of Anglo-Norman
architecture. And at Southampton, a chapter in Americas history began
when the Pilgrims took their leave of England for the New World. |

The name Gibraltar is a corruption of the Arabic Jebel al
Tariq. During the classical age, The Rock formed one of the Pillars
of Hercules, marking the Western boundary of the known world. Gibraltars
setting is matched by its history five countries have battled for 13
centuries to control the passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
The result has made for a cultural melting pot. Veiled Moroccan women stroll
the steep lanes and locals revert to a liquid Spanish when talking among
themselves. Visitors to a 15th-century cathedral pass through a blue-tiled
courtyard, remnant of a 13th-century mosque. Yet helmeted Bobbies,
pillar-boxes, and pubs make The Rock a bit of Britain in the Mediterranean.

Movie stars, motor yachts, the crush of paparazzi on the Croisette - such
are the images of Cannes and its legendary film festival. But this gracious
city with its palm-lined boulevard dividing divine beaches from chic
cafés is also your gateway to Monaco and Monte Carlo, Nice and St.
Tropez. For centuries this former Roman camp - the Castrum de Canios - was
nothing more than a sleepy port. Then in 1834, the British Lord Chancellor
interrupted his journey to Italy to take shelter from a cholera outbreak. He
fell in love with the stunning coast, built a villa, and voila! Two centuries
later, the town is synonymous with glamour, luxury, and a sybaritic lifestyle.

Livorno is the gateway to Florence and Tuscany. The cradle of the
Renaissance, Florence is home to the Duomo, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio.
Here the Medici fostered a city-state whose cultural legacy is as great as
classical Athens. Giants like Dante, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Galileo
infused the West with a new creative spirit. Then there is Pisa,
Florences rival for political power. A brash, commercial seafaring town,
Pisa competed with the great maritime republics of Venice and Genoa. Whether
you choose to explore Florence, Pisa, or the Tuscan countryside, you will
experience an unforgettable adventure. |

| Rome (Civitavecchia) Italy |
|

|
|

Civitavecchia is Romes seaport and your gateway to the Eternal City.
The port has a venerable history. The emperor Trajan built a pleasure villa
near the modern city. The harbour has served as Romes principal seaport
for over seven centuries. And two great artists of the Italian Renaissance,
Bernini and Michelangelo, designed the harbour fortifications. |
|
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Yet the Eternal City eternally beckons. The ancient capital of the Western
World and the centre of Christianity for nearly 2,000 years, Rome is an
inexhaustible feast. Visit the ruins of the Forum, view the splendours of the
Sistine Chapel, or climb the Spanish Steps - once the heart of Romes
Bohemian Quarter. The citys staggering collection of sights
churches, fountains, museums, piazzas, ruins, and more cannot be seen in
a day. But they can prove an eternal lure for the traveller. |

The lush and verdant island of Corfu lies in the Ionian Sea, midway between
Greece and Italy. The island was first colonised by the ancient Greek
city-state of Corinth. In time, Corfu has been ruled by the Romans, the
Venetians, the French, and the English. The colourful old town boasts
fortresses bearing the insignia of the Venetian Republic, an esplanade lavishly
planted by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, and an English cricket pitch.
The island also offers some of the finest coastal scenery in the entire
Mediterranean. |

Dubrovnik is often hailed as the Pearl of the Adriatic. The
small, walled, medieval old port is an instantly recognised image. The reality
is even finer. Stroll down the Stradun to visit superb monasteries, view the
silver and gold reliquaries in the Cathedral, explore the old Rectors
Palace, or walk along the citys medieval walls. Little wonder that UNESCO
designated the old city as World Heritage Site. Heavily shelled during the
Serbo-Croatian War of 1991 92, the indomitable city has been restored to
its old beauty. |

The islands of the Laguna Veneta were settled during the Dark Ages by
refugees fleeing barbarian invasions. From this humble beginning, Venice
literally rose from the sea to become the Serenissima Republic. The city-state
grew into a mighty commercial, political, and military empire controlling most
of the Eastern Mediterranean. Countless harbours from Asia minor to the
Adriatic are still guarded by fortresses adorned with the winged lions of St.
Mark the heraldic device of Venice. At its height in the Renaissance,
the Republic was one of the supreme centres of world culture, a magnet for the
finest artists, poets, and philosophers in the Western world. |

Hailed as Queen of the Sea, Venice remains one of the
worlds most romantic travel destinations. The city rises from the waves
like a fairy-tale backdrop. Glorious Renaissance and Baroque buildings line the
177 canals. Gondolas still ply the citys waters, gliding beneath ancient
stone bridges as gondoliers still serenade their passengers. |
