Every Alaska cruise line has a reputation. Some are known for their variety of cuisine and activities, others for amazingly personal service. If you're a senior, you'll probably be looking for a different experience than a 20-something. And families will have different needs than singles. If you can afford it, a balcony cabin is ideal for Alaskan cruises. These sailings spend days cruising by stunning scenery and calving glaciers, and a balcony provides a private space from which you can take in the sights. As a pioneer in developing Alaskan cruises and operating pre- and post-cruise land tours, Princess Cruises offers an outstanding combination of land and sea packages in the Alaska market.

We also highly recommend the Gulf of Alaska cruise itinerary offered by Princess Cruises.

Best time to cruise Alaska Alaska High Season: June - August: Temperatures are their warmest (highs: 50's - 70's), plus the further into the summer you are, the better your chances of seeing wildlife on the various expeditions. For a pricing advantage, northbound glacier routes tend to be cheaper than southbound. Low Season: May and September smaller crowds and cheaper prices as a result of the weather gamble (highs: 50's - 60's) and the possibility of snow. Denali National Park has been known to close in September due to snow.
Denali Park Alaska Denali Park is home to North America's highest mountain, Mt. McKinley, towering over 20,300 feet tall. The 6 million acre park will also give you one of your best opportunities to see Alaska's wildlife such as grizzly bear, moose, wolves, Dall sheep and caribou. Denali Park is located about 240 miles north of Anchorage, about 5 ½ hours by road or 8 hours by train. The park is open year round, but the road into Denali Park and most visitor facilities are only open from mid-May through the third week in September.

Cruise Tour Planners - Alaska cruise

Unless you're navigating your own ship, there are really only 2 itineraries for an Alaska cruise:
Inside Passage This is the classic Alaska cruise itinerary. Sailing round-trip from Vancouver, you'll typically stop at three or four port towns, like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and either Sitka, Haines, or Victoria, B.C. These cruises usually spend a day in Glacier Bay, Alaska or another glacier area and 2 days at sea. Glacier bay tours are a must.
Gulf of Alaska These cruises usually sail northbound or southbound between Vancouver and Seward. You'll likely hit many of the same stops that the Inside Passage cruise does, but because it's a one-way, you'll also get to go to Valdez, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord, or another town in the gulf. So which do you do?
If you're the kind of cruiser who likes to sail right along, taking in the scenery, you'll probably prefer the Inside Passage Alaska cruises, since you'll have a couple full days doing just that. But if you like getting off the ship to go exploring and want to see more of the state, look into the Gulf of Alaska. Just keep in mind that the Gulf of Alaska is one-way, so you'll have to get back to your starting point.

Small ships If your dream is to see Alaska up close, without having to battle the crowds, then you'll want to set sail on a small ship. You may feel cramped; cabins aren't big, and there won't be any casino or Vegas-type show. But these ships allow you an unequalled view of nature and wildlife. They're definitely for the more active traveler; instead of disembarking to, say, go shopping, you may take bikes or kayaks out. There are no crowds to fight. However, they are more expensive. Small ships don't scare off wildlife. A more flexible schedule and more navigable ship means you'll get up close to nature. Your crew knows you by name and you become good friends with other passengers.
Alaska Inside Passage Cruises Journey deep into one of nature's most isolated monuments accessible only by sea and air and encounter the magnificence of the Ice Age as you slowly glide through the Alaska Inside Passage. See Tracy Arm and the twin Sawyer Glaciers. Kayak in Ketchikan, dogsled in Skagway and ride a helicopter for an overhead view of Juneau's four glaciers. A must for first-time visitors to Alaska that spotlights the complete Alaska Inside Passage cruise experience. Guaranteed views of sky-splitting peaks, glaciers and vast wilderness. An onboard naturalist interprets the view from deck and points out wildlife. We carry far fewer guests than other ships in our class, allowing for more quiet corners and unfettered views.
